Okay, Ms Stapler, full disclosure ... it was her first day on the job [and maybe her last, she disappeared halfway through the meal, never to return again.]
In my little backwater restaurant, I'd pull another server over to get an opinion when I wasn't sure...but then again, I didn't last long at that job, either.
In the 3 weeks that I worked at a restaurant, I didn't get a chance to try everything. So when a customer asked for a recommendation, I would just wing it. Not 7 is my favorite number, but that meal is really good. Though it'd be really funny if they tried to sue for getting a bad meal on recommendation.
I would've gotten annoyed by that, but only because I take my food choices seriously so when I ask a server about a dish I expect a straight answer, before I end up eating vile crap for dinner.
Yes, she never returned. I mean, we had some very personable asian women waiting on us for the last 50% of the meal. No explanation. Mystery waitress could've just been someone who walked in off the street for all we knew ...
Well---if it was her First Day on the Job, why did you ask her what she would recommend? Light To Be Shed: Most places make waiters pay for thier meals. Usually, the first day of a waiters job they are beyond broke, having just spent a week in traing at minimum wage (wanna talk about GW Mignon? Cuz I am ALL OVER THAT), and probably cannot have afforded to try out #6 #7 #8. And she was probably nervous, and she probably wanted to give you an answer other than "I don't know", or "It's my first day and I am too broke to afford to be your Personal Taster, so I am going to go with what I do know, which is the #7". Honestly, The Aristocratic Nouveau Riche these days.....
Wailing - 1. it was not ME that asked The Question. It was my friend, and in my defense, I said "It's her first day!!" but when the waitress forged ahead with the answer, I thought it was too good not to repeat. I mean, she shoulda said "Yes, it is my first day so I can't really give advice," and that would have covered it.
And also in our defense, we were super nice to her and patient and all that. I just thought it was a funny exchange.
