It will come to this for all of us

Just a short post. Dad had a big stroke and is slowly fading away.

The whole family is here and are being supportive, nurturing, polite and hilarious as only they can be.

I sat awake all night last night watching Dad breathe. It was strange and good and awful and dear. Some day I will try to capture it in words.

Update: He passed peacefully yesterday about 3 pm. We were all there. Rest in peace, dad, and have fun with Laura.

Continuing to have you and your family in my thoughts. I can't imagine these moments yet to be captured.

(And don't get me started on soulectomies...)

When my mom was dying (gah I hate writing that) some of the nurses and dr's seemed to have a soulectomy. But when I spoke to another one she said that some just can't allow themselves to get "involved" with the patient emotionally and have to put up a wall.

So much love and so many hugs for you.

That's way hard Suebob.

It's so hard to teach compassion. The emphasis is on the body. The mind and the soul get short shrift. Doing more with less, the theme of America. I find that medical professionals *can* hear you if you can find a way to gently remind them that they are human beings and that sometimes the rote things we say don't apply.

Prayers for you and the Suebob family.

Oh Suebob, I'm so, so sorry. I flew home in June and sat with my grandmother in much the same way. Strange, good, awful and dear - yes, that's exactly what it was like. Those hours in the middle of the night were precious.

My deepest sympathies, Sue. I never met your dad, Hell, I haven't met you, but reading about your family for the past couple of years made me feel like I knew him a little bit.

Big hugs to you.

Oh, SueB0b. So very very sorry. This is similar to the way my Dad passed in 2002.

So glad he had you all there with him at the last.

I'm so sorry. I lost my father last month, too - it's just so hard, in ways I never imagined it would be.
