Suddenly it all made sense

My friend Ish is about my age. He has the energy and enthusiasm of a kid, but on some things he is kind of old school.

"I have a hard time telling my mom I love her," he said. "Maybe it's a guy thing. It's just hard for me. Instead of saying 'I love you' I say 'Drive safely.'"

I thought of all the times I wished my dad could say "I love you." And all the times he has said "Drive safe. Be careful."

Now I know what he was really saying. It feels really good to have that translation.

Wouldn't it be great if someone did a whole boatload of research and interviews and came up with a Male to Female translation dictionary?

Now I know what my Dad is saying too!

My grandfather, clearly a notch or two further away in emotional removal, always used to say, "Drive defensively."

I like the idea of the male/female translation dictionary. :)

We're kind of like that in my family. Not a lot of outright "I love yous," but lots and lots of camouflaged ones. :)

For my dad it was, "Check your oil."

Damn keyboard got all blurry again. What a lightning bolt of clarity! I love your intuition and perspectives and how you gather it all up into polished nuggets for us, your faithful lurkers.

You are so lucky. You have awesome parents. I wish I knew what that felt like. Cherish them!
Hugs!!

My father's "love language" also leaned toward the automotive. I never for a moment doubted his love for us, but it sure was a treat when he started saying those three magic words, "I love you," after my mom passed away.

Completely random but...you are the second person in the last week to talk about a friend named "Ish". I wonder how many there are!
