About what, a month ago, the Obama campaign got me to sign up to BE ONE OF THE FIRST to find out who his vice presidential running mate was going to be.
They were going to send out the news via text message. It was going to be so cool!
Here's how I imagined it would go down: I would be at Farmer's Market or getting a coffee and suddenly all around me, people's phones would begin to ding and buzz.
We would all fish around simultaneously, read our text, and look at each other. We would smile knowing smiles, chuckle, and say "How about that?" It would be a fun little community Democrat bonding experience.
But instead we waited. I haven't waited so hard for the phone to ring since I dated flaky guys in my 20s. Days went by. Weeks.
I started to get pissed off. "Dude is NEVER gonna call," I thought. "I bet that jerk lost my number."
By Thursday or so, it became apparent that we were going to be the FIRST TO FIND OUT but NOT BY VERY DANG MUCH. We were special, but not THAT special.
Last night, I was surprised how little Twitter buzz there was about it. It seemed that people, like me, were pretty much over it.
I awoke this morning to find a text had been sent at 1:48 a.m. WHO DOES THAT?
People don't text about important decisions at 1:48 a.m. They send booty calls. They drunk-message things you don't want to read.
Lame. The whole thing was the emotional equivalent of a guy who whispers "Oh baby, it is gonna be so good," for weeks ahead of time. And then the time comes. And baby, it ain't that good.

You are always on-target. This is more of a key political message than any I've seen lately.
From what I understand, Obama's aides had planned to send the text this morning but because the news leaked last night, they ended up sending them in the middle of the night so that the people who had been promised texts would hear about it that way instead of on the morning news. I wasn't on the text list, but I don't think I would have minded anyway because for Joe Biden? Eh. I could have waited.
Argh. Perfect post about this imperfect situation! Obama's aides = epic fail.
Suebob for Veep! "Booty call" is so classic, I'm going to be laughing all day.
Oh, dude. So sorry you were disappointed, but my blackberry buzzed me awake and I responded to the booty call and it was awesome.
But still. This post was hilarious.
;-)
Feels like the campaign missed an opportunity. I know several people who were waiting and waiting and waiting. At least on the west coast they were probably still awake when the text came.
Then again, from the short list that was floated, I am not sure I'd have been excited by any of those as VP.
I twittered it last night and saw nothing else from followers/following. I was a little surprised too, but it was definitely over-hyped.
put perfectly. Also? I slept through the whole thing.
Guess I wasn't the one to call if he was lookin' for a booty call last night! :)
Even worse was probably the feeling of stark reality once the beer goggles came off and the daylight showed the true choice for veep.
Yikes. What now?
Just found you through - of course - Twitter. What a great post!
I didn't sign up for a text message because I didn't want to pay 10 cents for something I could find out for free, so no disappointment here, although I am bummed that people didn't get their text. On the other hand, I like Joe Biden (so long as he does not slip into the 3rd person ever again), so when I woke up and got the news on the internets, I was pleased. Then I read how many people are disappointed by Joe Biden, and I didn't understand why all the grumbling, so I joined the ranks of the bummed. Seriously, what is wrong with Joe Biden? He ranks 99 out of 100 in terms of wealthy senators. He works hard for good legislation, and can help navigate Congress, which is critical if we actually want to see change happen. His wife rocks the house.
I'm sorry, sista, it's my fault...Me and Barack, well...we was occupied up until that time when he texted you, girl. I had Mr. Obama..."tied" up, girl. Uh-huh...dats right. Me and Barack was trying to get one of us pregnant.
But, I'm on the pill.
Oh wait, Barack trying to say something to you right now. What, Barack? I'm talking to Suebob right now, bish. What you want? Oh. Okay...
He says he's "sorry".
Once again, SueBob, you said it better than anyone I know. I was wondering how the people who had signed up would respond to this middle of the night text. I think "Booty Call" summed it up perfectly.
Yeah...I totally missed my opportunity to be disappointed. So now I'm...uh...?
Last week, one of my co-workers asked me if I was going to sign up for the Obama text message, and I said, "No, I don't want him to have my number. He'll be calling me at 2 a.m." Turns out it was 3 a.m! Hilarious.
Yes but did you get the nice letter from Joe Biden?
I still haven't received my text or booty text from Barack. Am I not pretty enough for him?
Huh, that's weird. He texted me the day before around noon. :)
