Crap on a cracker. How much does it suck that the only brand of dogfood that Goldie will eat, the $1.21 per can Nutro Max Chicken and Rice chunks, is on the recall list?
I have been feeding my dog very expensive food that may have been killing her (pounding head on keybkdhr23899efboard).
Goldie is pretty hilarious about food that she does not like. She goes to the bowl, sniffs the food, then proceeds to loudly lick the edges of the bowl while gazing balefully and meaningfully in my direction.
"Hey, human," I can almost hear her saying. "You can see that I am HUNGRY because I am at my bowl. Yet I plainly reject this slop. Can you perhaps get off your ass long enough to get me some decent chow?"
Dr. Jean Hofve is an expert in animal nutrition and now I feel bad I didn't take her advice. Maybe I will start baking chickens again. Yes, I absolutely see the nuttiness in the concept that I will not feed myself or those I love meat, but that I will cook chicken for my dog. I never claimed to be sane.

I was so annoyed when I heard about the recall. We have 2 cats and a dog. Our dog pretty much eats anything so my husband and I know that our cooking is pretty terrible when the dog refuses to eat any leftover "treats" (not that we ever feed our dog off the table of course!)
I have a vegetarian friend who has her dog on a mostly veggie diet... she does boil hamburger for her every week, but that dog will knock you down to get to carrots or yogurt, I swear.
Why I am telling you this, I'm not sure. Maybe to encourage you to share your Trader Joe's soup with her. ;)
My cat is the same picky way about food. He'll just sit there and pretend that the bowl is empty wen it is filled with something he doesn't like. That includes crumbs, btw. There have to be whole pieces in there.
Heh heh. You said love meat.
(Could you go to some really old, musty mini-mart and buy your dog food there? I was thinking anything older than 6 months would be okay...)
Now that's love.
Aww..isn't that rubbish? I've been a bad mommy to my pets (or so I thought) for a while...depriving them of their beloved wet food. Good thing, because the food that the kitties love was on the list. I guess we'll switch brands when I become a good mommy again.
I didn't realize there was a dog food recall. Makes me feel a bit less guilty for giving her Purina's fancy brand over the really, REALLY fancy brands...
Alex - Goldie likes almost all "people food." But she turns her nose up at kibble and most brands of wet food. Sigh.
Mir - If I fed Goldie yogurt, she would fart so bad she might explode.
Des - Cats I expect. But picky dogs? I never met one before.
Mignon - I went to return the bad food. I said to the girl at the counter, "So this is on the bad list, right?" She found it on the list, then RANG IT UP and said "That will be $14.83." Umm no.
Meno - Yes, indeed.
KG - You TRY to do the right thing! Then it comes back to bite you in the butt.
Lisa - one of the reasons I posted was so that other people could find out.
Luckily my dog eats Pedigree-which thankfully wasn't on the list. It has to be the puppy kind, even though he's 9 years old or else he won't go near it. When we were in Canada, for some reason the tap water wasn't good enough for him. He would accept only bottled water. I do feed him chicken breast and steak once in a while too. And he has best healthcare in the family...Oh how much we love our pets!
you know - dogs will eventually eat whatever is put down for them. if they're hungry... they'll eat what's there. i know, it sounds cruel to make them eat what they don't like, but seriously? what a pain in the ass, cooking for your dog.
not that i don't love my pups, i do! really!
but jeebus. i barely cook for myself, i couldn't imagine having to do it for them.
What really gets me is that you not only will cook the chicken but you bought whole chickens last time, which means you had to debone the meat once it was cooked. (I've never had a dog but I'm sure I heard they choke on the bones right?) So if that ain't self-sacrificing love I don't know what is!
I know a guy who cooks chicken and rice for his dogs every single night. He himself eats TV dinners.
There's an odd sort of poetry in that.
Seventeen pets dead, it's unbelievable and so sad. I would definitely consider cooking chickens for her at this point.
