"If voting could change anything, they wouldn't let you do it."
Overly cynical or on target? Discuss.

Must it be one or the other? It's cynical and valid. With elections right here in these United States being hijacked, who really knows. But if Kucinich becomes president, I'd say you were too cynical.
My husband and I go through this all the time. I faithfully vote with hope in every election while he either abstains or votes without any real faith that he is vote is even being counted. He may be right...but I can't face that reality -- so I continue to vote.
It's totally cynical and totally accurate. Re: G.W.'s "win" in the last election. Some other word besides "democracy" should be used to describe our presidential elections. But that's a whole other dicussion.
I vote in every single election hoping that's not true while suspecting that it is. I also request a paper ballot these days, even though I have a feeling that my local election people have absolutely no idea what to do with it and my end up "losing" it rather than counting it.
On the presidential front, that's what the electoral college is all about - making sure the little people can't fuck things up too badly. On the local front, it's a little different. Just look at school boards elections and the introduction of "creation theory" into science curricula.
Ouch. I don't know. You kind of have a point considering I just read on Wiki that only 70% of people eligible to vote are registered and on the average barely %50 percent of registered voters actually vote. There was an exception in 2004 when there was a whopping 64% turnout which, if this is accurate, in my opinion, still sucks. If people actually voted, politicians would have to, oh I don't know, do their jobs maybe?! Because they would know that if they don't deliver, someone else is ready to take their place.....
And that quote might already be on target since so many people (including myself) question the integrity of the voting machines. sigh
Yeah, I wonder about this every time election day rolls around. I still vote in every election because I believe you don't have a right to bitch if you don't vote.

Oh boy, I'd like to say the former, but I'm afraid I usually think the latter.
I think our electoral process needs a major overhaul. I might feel more optimistic if I thought individual votes actually counted for something.

Great topic Suebob.
Over cynical.
I hope.
The guy I'm dating feels the same way. I'm not sure how I feel I just think back to how it must have been like when we didn't have any say at all.
Oh how we forget the luck we have living in this country.

There is so much talk of change that my hair is turning white. How many times have we heard this without any change ever coming about?
