I Walk the Line

Goldie with some toys 350 px

My blogging gets shitty when I am hiding something. My blogging has been pretty shitty lately. I feel like I am walking a minefield of worries.

My job may be eliminated. And it isn't like it is a good time to look for a job, either. My mom is in constant pain. My dad is legally blind and getting more forgetful and confused by the day. Giant blobs of mucus are taking over the ocean.

And now my dog is deaf. I don't think she lost her hearing suddenly, but I noticed it suddenly. I went to my folks' house and she was outside in the back yard. I went to look for her and saw her around the corner of the house, standing looking at the back door.

I said "Goldie."

She didn't even look.

"Goldie. GOLDIE." Nothing.

Finally she saw me out of the corner of her eye and came leaping up, happily.

So. She still seems happy but it must be strange for her, the dog with supersonic hearing, the dog who could hear a lizard rustle a leaf 10 feet away, to be deaf.

Fortunately we both already know everything the other one wants and is thinking, so there isn't much talking to do. It's just another weird thing.

Tell me some happy news.

Oh Sue, I wish I had some happy news. You have lots of friends who love you, but that isn't really news. (Going through the same thing with my own father too, and it's not fun.)

Sending good energy, especially about the job.

I don't have anything concretely happy, as I am hiding things, too. The job thing, some family crises, etc.

Hang in there is about all I can offer. :)

You know we could bright side the Goldie thing a little. Now you don't have to blame yourself for all the times she went running down the beach and didn't come when you called. Poor thing just couldn't hear you, that's all, she wasn't blowing you off to play in the waves longer at all!

I recommend lying down on the floor and spooning your dog as balm for worries.

Here is some happy news for you:

My older son who has autism, who is mostly non-verbal, who would 1 month ago gladly go the day without speaking even in his little first-syllable word approximations, who only ever asked for tangible things (I want cup; I want K - for his alphabet book)... my son recently has asked for me (I want Mama) and my husband (I want Daddy). He has also started randomly naming/labeling things.

There you go.

I hope things start to get easier for you soon!

Not really happy news, but if you really want to test Goldie's hearing, go in the kitchen and rattle her food dish/treat jar/cookie jar, whatever usually gets her attention. She may not be as deaf as you think she is. On the brighter side, my neighbor's dog went blind suddenly, lost one eye to ulcers, went deaf, lost the other eye to ulcers, has a heart murmur, and he is as happy as a clam.

Sorry, accidentally clicked twice and I don't know how to delete it! Hope today goes better.

I'm having a crappy morning, so I'm struggling to find something good to tell you, but I really want you to have good things to think about that don't have to do with some of the consequences of ageing.

Here: one of my kitties just licked my foot, curled himself around it, and went to sleep. I am wearing a live kitten slipper.

Hrm. Maybe, "every day is a new day?" with new chances and opportunities. I know it's great to feel that way.

Unfortunately we don't get to escape from M. Scott Peck's central truism that is hard to accept: "Life is hard."

Sorry about Goldie. Wondering if the diagnosis is definitive. For some reason I think "earwax?" -- how does a vet check for dog deafness? What does the vet say?

Maybe not a fix-it good news blurb, but positive thinking. Being the Deaf -o-phile that I am, I've always had a soft spot for Deaf dogs too. A friend years ago had a deaf dalmation. She'd been deaf since birth and, just like humans, adapt to the world they know. Dogs are the same even if it happens later in life. Goldie is happy because she has you. One thing that won't change, but you'll notice it more in her now, is she'll visually check for you more. She was looking at the back door so she knows where you SHOULD be. If she doesn't see you, she'll find you.
Of all that you have going on, Goldie's hearing is the least of your worries. She's also, as Kizz said, can be the balm for your worries. Cuddle that puppy and feel your stress lessen!

Hang in there SueBob, we're here for you.

I love you guys. Kalyn, Rachel and Schmutzie can come over for cookies and hot chocolate.

Thanks, Mary! That is indeed good news.

And Jennster - I love your good news. Made me laugh, which I needed.

I'm with you. My life is full of stress right now, and to make it worse, it's stuff I can't talk about on my blog, because it would betray the trust of one very close to me. It sucks and is scary, though.

And my blog feels the pain, because I'm not thinking of much else, but can't talk about it. Sigh.

And my dog went blind this year, so I know what you mean on that front, too.

This too shall pass. Not necessarily in a way we would like, for some of the worries, but there will be a time when we're not as worried as we are now.

I love Jennster's good news. That rocks. Totally.

Good news from me? There's plenty of it all around, I suspect, but I'm having trouble seeing it. We may be going to Portland to see family for Christmas, and everyone there is healthy, I think. So there's that.

Hugs. I have some good news: I had two job interviews this week that I think went well.

OH, babe. I am so sorry. You are one of the best, bestest people out there. ALWAYS defending others.

This should NOT happen. Especially to you. I'm tearing up here for you. You're amazing. ((((HUGS)))))

I'm having kind of a shit time myself so not much good news, other than I'm going to New York tomorrow for the weekend which is making me pretty happy.

Also...um, not not much else.

My dog went deaf seemingly overnight as well. It was so weird! They should hear and live and be awesome for eternity. LIFE!

I miss you.

I have an ancient cat who's been deaf for a couple of years now. It took me a while to notice, but I figured it out by how hard she sleeps and how loud her voice has gotten.

She's doing great, though. Doesn't even seem to notice she can't hear.

I've been sitting here for five minutes trying to think of some happy news for you, and I've got nothing.
