My guilty admission

I must confess: there is almost nothing I ever do to get dirty enough to justify the lengthy, scalding-hot showers that I take.

For instance, I went to the gym today and worked up a little sweat and came home and took a 15 minute shower. Didn't wash my hair, even. I will do that in the morning.

Hot running water is the pinnacle of civilization to me. Take away TV, the internet, highways, airplanes, coffeemakers...but leave me my hot water. And proper dental care.

What is your idea of the best thing civilization has to offer?

Oh, I'm with you. I adore the sheer hedonism of hot baths. I sometimes take baths so hot they use up all the hot water in the hot water heater. That's not very eco friendly is it? I try not to do that too often, but I confess, it's my most shameful induglence.

hot water is AWESOME. I'm guilty of that as well.

Me three, both showers and baths. I take them so hot they leave me looking like a steamed lobster. Bad for the environment and for my skin, but I just can't resist!

Showers still seem a tiny bit luxurious to me just because when I was growing up we didn't have a shower, just a bathtub. But nothing beats a bath.

Count me in as red lobster number four...I am looking into one of those tankless hot water heaters so I can take even LONGER showers...

Up until recently it was something I took for granted, but after reading a fellow bloggers tale of toilets in India - I now count Western Toilets as my modern convenience that I will not do without.

Our power goes out with some frequency. I am fine with this because we have gas hot water heaters. If the gas should ever go out i won't last a day.

Oh I know something that, in the coldest winter time, takes a good hot shower even further: A bathroom heater. My Grandma had one that she told me my Grandpa installed for her as a birthday gift and I remember thinking, damn he loves you! Since I live in the South where it never snows. I can't really say that this is the BEST thing but talking about showers brought that to my mind.

I'm with you re: showers. I'm toying with the idea of chucking our old water heater and replacing it with one o' them new-fangled on-demand heaters -- that way I'll never run out of scalding hot water.

On a related note, Advil and air-conditioning top my list of greatest inventions of the 20th century.

It's all about a hot bubble bath. I want to just drag a snorkel in the tub with me and stay there. Now if someone could just invent a waterproof trashy novel...ahh, that's civilization for you..

Indoor plumbing is indeed #1. I'm always amazed that flushing doesn't take gas or electric...just water! But very next on the list is hot shower/bath.

Here's how old I am: when I was in my teens and twenties, it was almost impossible to get a decent cup of coffee. Today, the 7-11, McDonalds, Starbucks, not to mention the superlative coffee at Peet's, the old Dirtrich's, etc. make fresh, delicious coffee accesible 24 hrs a day. I am convinced this is behind the unprecedented increases in worker productivity, not the internet, wireless communication, and other such " advances "
